An extraordinary piece of ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness, I'm quite sure this container was made from the shell or shells from big game guns used in East Africa. It's been decorated on both ends and provided with loops at both ends for suspending it.
It hard to overestimate the value of a waterproof container at a time, and in a place where there were no plastic containers or plastic bags, etc. This could have been used to contain anything from important documents (ID, land deeds) to gold, medicine or magical substances.
In any case it's unique, and brings back a lot of memories of crossing the great plains and highlands of East Africa on our way home to Rwanda for breaks from our boarding school in Nairobi. Sometimes the train would have to stop to let the wildebeest migration pass....the nights were dark, the skies were bright with millions of stars, the only. noises came from animals and other forms of nature.
