Description
- These rare perfect tabular millefiori beads are priced and sold individually
- Classic blue, white, red and amber murrine separated by bands of green, just like flowers in a field. The name millefiori means 1000 flowers in Italian
- In this case, the complex process started with a gather of blue glass, which was coated in white and then blue again. With this second blue layer the gather was inserted into a mold to create the way ouline of the flower to which were added white, red and amber layers. The molten gather of glass was then stretched into a long rod and cooled. Next it was cut into thin slices, each depicting the flower.
- These were spread out on a heated surface and semi-molten glass bead cores rolled over them. Depending on the direction and degree of pressure in this process the shapes of the flowers spread and embedded differently.
- Made in Venice, Italy for the African trade, mid- to late-1800s
