- The luster is good, but the color varies from medium to light pink so the price is lower, but this can actually a sign that the pearls have not been dyed. However if the cord they are on is colored, they are likely dyed.
- Pearls are formed inside bivalves (similar to oysters), which coat any foreign substance that gets inside their shell with a smooth layer of pearly nacre to eliminate the irritation. This coating grows over time increasing the pearl's luster and size. The color is influenced by minerals in the water.
- The Chinese cultured some pearls in the 12th or 13th century, but the Japanese developed it into an industry by 1900, inserting mother-of-pearl beads as the basis of their cultured pearls.
