Description

  • Medium large, relatively early Tom Boylan bead, trailed design 38x20mm
  • The layers of color are so fine in this bead that you really need a magnifying glass to see them properly. Layers of blue and a new red are added to "sea & sand"
  • Tom lived near the coast in Mendocino County, CA and loved to have coffee overlooking the ocean and/or walk the beaches at low tide.
  • Self-taught, reclusive, Northern California artist Tom Boylan was one of the earliest American bead-makers. An avid gardener and astrologer, his beads seem infused with both nature and the cosmos. They appeal equally to men and women, and were among the most popular we carried at Beadazzled.
  • Tom used borosilcate tubing as the base for his beads, adding dots and stripes. Then temporarily closing off one end, he blew into the tube to achieve the desired size and shape. As a final touch he gave the ends a twist.
  • Sadly Tom left this earth in the fall of 2024. I hope he's somehow among the stars that meant so much to him.
