Description

  • Black barrel shape bead with satin gold swirling over it, 27x23
  • Collectible bead by Toshimasa Masui, one of several Japanese glass beadmakers who started exhibiting in the US in the late 1990s, encouraged and assisted by Emiko Sawamoto. Their work was mostly exquisitely detailed, precise, and expensive.
  • I was attracted to this bead because although the technical skill is evident the final result appears more organic.
  • Toshimasa Masui began making glass beads in 1987 without any formal art training. By 1993 he had opened his own studio in Japan, began teaching, and has served as a judge for flame work competitions. He exhibited and offered demos a few times at shows in the US although he has no permanent US representation. His work is featured in art galleries throughout Japan.
