Antique Venetian lampoworked glass trade beads with heavy use of "aventurine" glass. The name of this mixture of copper filings in clear glass was discovered accidentally, which translated into Italian, gives it its name.
Set of 11 beads in excellent condition. Largest measures 13mm diameter.
Made in Venice Italy 1800s to early 1900s for the African Trade.
Aventurine glass was also used to make beads for European markets.
Lampworking is an ancient bead-making technique, which the Venetians developed in to an art during the 1300s. Basically it involves melting glass rods of various thicknesses over a flame and manipulating the glass, first to from the core of the bead, and then to decorate its surface. These beadmaking techniques are fundamentally the same as those used by contemporary beadmakers, except with better equipment.
