The original batik process involves covering areas that are to remain white with molten wax then dipping the object in dye. In the case of African beads, that's black hair dye. When the wax is boiled off the white show up against the dark.
These Indian beads, however, are made by a different process. First the surface of the bead is dyed dark, probably also with hair dye. The the white color is exposed by scraping through the dark surface layer.
