Vintage Shipibo baby sling, handwoven, vegetable dyed sling with 36 etched and dyed bone dangles with geometric designs typical of this indigenous Peruvian Amazonian group. Only one available
Only one availableDuring the 1980s when I was importing and wholesaling Peruvian beads I found Shipbo pottery irresistible, and my favorite supplier also tempted me with this "baby carrier." She told me the lovely clicking noise made by the pendant dangles appealed to the babies, who also liked playing with them as their mothers carried them around in these slings.
The sling is 38 inches in circumference with a seam at the back. The width of the fabric without the dangles is 7 inches.
The dangles are very uniform in length at 2.25 inches. Their width ranges from 1/2 to 1 inch.
I, of course, intended to use the dangles as pendants, but 30 years later I still haven't been able to make myself cut this artifact up. At least not before offering it to someone who might want it as is...Here's your chance.
The Shipibo are a matriarchal society where the women hold most of the power, and are the primary artists in the community, famous for their fabric, and pottery decorated with maze-like geometric designs. They live in the jungle areas of eastern Peru - an area which has recently become better known for the hallucinogenic ayahuasca plant.
