Description

  • These beads are priced and sold by the set of 5
  • Large translucent dark cerulean "Dogon" oblate shape beads, 14x19 to 16x22mm
  • These beads have 3-4mm holes for easy stringing on leather, etc
  • This set is in very good condition considering their age, one bead has a significant chip. All have some small nicks and pits, which is normal for 300+ year old bead that have traveled widely. Overall the beads of this color seem a little more prone to damage than the cobalt color and thus are harder to find in usable condition.
  • Made in the Netherlands between 1700 and early 1900s for the African trade
  • They are called "Dogon" beads because they became particularly popular among the Dogon people of Central Mali.
  • Although the Venetians provided the bulk of the beads for the African trade, the bead and button workshops of Bohemia were not far behind. Dutch and French bead makers provided much smaller, but still interesting, contributions.
