They were made about 900 AD in Java and are said to be similar to Venetian mosaic or millefiori beads in that the core was covered by small bits of small glass that formed a pattern. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWhat confuses me is that many so called Jatim beads look more like lampworked than mosaic beads and that is certainly the case with the replicas I'm posting now as well as those pictured in books. These particualr beads have an odd feel to them, almost as if they were ceramic rather than glass, but they are also quite heavy, too heavy for clay I think because of the large hole there's not much mass to the bead.
