Description

  • Large beautiful elbow bead in brick red with amber, blue and white, 53x13mm
  • Bright white and blue molded chevron canes shine out against a backdrop of warm  brick red and amber hues.
  • There is one chip on one end of this bead, on the up-side it gives a view into the depth the murrine that make up the patterns on these beads. The cane slices are so think on this bead that you can't see any of the dark blue/black bead core at the ends.
  • I remember how when these beads first started coming to the US in large quantities in the late 1960 there was so much confusion about how they were made. Most people thought the designs were painted on, then there was a false story that the beads were only "real" Venetian antiques if there was no core bead. This was long before the process by which they were made was widely know, but I used to save up broken beads, just to help discredit this mis-information by showing that even beads that had no core showing at the ends, clearly had a core .
  • Made in Venice, Italy for the African trade, mid- to late 1800s
