Moroccan vintage enemeled Boghdad (aka Souther Cross) pendant 45x40mm
Decorated with blue, amber, green and rare red enamel, wirework and granulation
Channel for stringing the pendant runs through the rectangular area at the top
Unlike the smaller pendants these larger Boghdad crosses are about 6mm thick and thus the channel can accept a cord or chain up to about 4mm
Enameling has been practiced throughout Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco since the late 19th century by itinerant Imazighen (Berber) silversmiths of Muslim and Jewish faith.
The Boghdad or Southern Cross pendant is most closely associated with the Moors, descendants of people of mixed European, Arab and Berber ancestry who lived in Spain and later moved to Morocco. It has now been adopted by residents and nomads in neighboring regions of the Sahara and Sahel.
