New white hearts are just one example of new beads going to Africa in bulk to be strung like trade beads for the sole purpose of being exported back out.
The new ones are made in much the same way as when they were invented in the 1600s. A core of white class is covered by a layer of translucent glass. As a result, the colors seem lighter and brighter, as light is reflected back off the white core through the outer layer.
The original White Hearts were almost all red. Today we have a full rainbow of colors and a wide range of sizes.
Aside from more and brighter colors, new White Hearts are also more uniform in size and shape than older ones.
