A blast form the past: Puka shells from the early 1970s
Irregular chubby shell parts about 9mm diameter on 15-inch Strand
Formerly used to make traditional Hawaiian Leis, these became all the rage as chokers in the early 70s. Having just arrived from Africa: the land of wonderful beads I was not impressed. However, they may have opened the door to a bead revival in the USA. Love Beads came next, and then the flood gates opened with boatloads of beads from Africa, India and Asia.
I dug this strand out of my beads-for-the-Dictionary of Beads stash
