Putting MOP in the gemstone category is a bit of a stretch, but after all it's made of the same substance (nacre) that covers pearls - one of the organic gems. MOP pearl beads are cut from shells of large mollusks and conches. The natural color is beige, these and all white mother-of-pearl is bleached.
