Description
- Classic Tuareg silver earrings. The design is derived from a traditional Tuareg ring, originally set with stone, and later glass.
- The frame is made of sterling silver with vintage Czech glass triangular insert, in this case it's green.
- The silver on the front of each earring is etched with detailed geometric designs, while the back bears a makers' mark variously rendered in letters, symbols, or Amazigh (Berber) script. In this case it looks like Amazigh
- The Tuareg are semi-nomadic herders of goats, sheep, donkeys and camels, who travel around the Sahara and Sahel in Libya, Algeria, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Some have also settled, for at least part of the year in, villages in these areas as well as in Morocco.
- Among the Tuareg, silversmiths who perform near magical feats with fire and precious metals, are thought to have exceptional powers. This status confers respect mixed with a little fear.
- In Tuareg culture, both men and women wear amulets, necklaces, rings and bracelets. The have a reputation as warriors, but it's also a matrilineal society where women have more respect and freedom than in most Islamic societies.
- The rising price of silver, the political/economic situation in Mali, and the increasing scarcity of skilled smiths contribute to the rising prices of Tuareg silver jewelry. I've been searching for these for months and was excited to finally find some.
