Antique Yemeni necklace with 5 large "Badihi Globe" beads
Although the beads on this necklace are smaller than some, they are the best matched set among the 3 necklaces of this type I have at the moment. This would tend to indicate that this one was held longer by one person and not broken up or melted down to be remade and shared among multiple daughters. The beads are worn evenly smooth with a nice patina.
Largest bead 28x25mm, 2 medium beads 24x25mm and 24x24mm
Both of the medium beads are signed, as are both of the small ones although one of the signature panels is nearly completely worn away.
These beads are called Badihi after an extended family of Jewish rabbis and master silversmiths who worked in Yemen until the emigrated to Israel in the late 1940s.
Between the larger beads in this traditional necklace are round silver beads and simple versions of another classic Yemeni bead called Boswani. Of the three necklaces of this type that I have this one has the best Bowsani type beads although they are not full expression of the style.
Two cones and silver chain finish this necklace off, but the chain is missing.
