Bright and shiny new lost wax cast face pendants from Ghana, 32x78mm
The lost wax casting process involves first creating the object in thin strings of wax (remember this is happening in a tropical climate!) then the object is coated in clay. The clay mold, when dry, is heated so the wax runs out of openings left for that purpose.
Molten recycled brass is then poured into the mold filling all the cavities where the wax was. Finally the mold is broken open to reveal the finished brass bead or pendant, which is then cleaned and polished. Although similar, one is unique because once the mold is broken it can't be re-used.
