- Set of 5 vintage small cylinder beads made by the lost wax casting method
- 15-20mm long and 3-4mm in diameter
- The lost wax casting method involves first creating the object out of threads of bees' wax, and coating it in clay to make make a mold. When the dry mold is heated the clay hardens, the wax runs out, and molten metal is poured in. When the mold cools it's broken open to reveal the bead, which is then cleaned and polished. Each bead is unique because the mold cannot be re-used.
- It's not surprising that these fine Baoule brass beads are getting harder and harder to find as fewer people have the knowledge or patience to create art in this way.
- These beads were once gold plated. Now that that has worn off, if you'd like them to be shinier you can polish them with lemon juice or in a rotary tumbler. Brass polish would be too messy for these small beads.
