Description

  • This large Nueva Cadiz bead from Africa is 3.5 inches long
  • This bead is darker than the ones on the strand AFT-56
  • If you look at the cross section of the cane you can see the white layer is unusually thin which means it's casting less light back through the aqua surface layer so the bead looks darker.
  • Nueva Cadiz are drawn beads and some of the earliest, used by the Spanish to trade in the Americas. Those beads were considerably smaller than the version traded to Africa later, but the composition was the same.
  • Made in Venice, Italy for the African trade early 1800s
  • Named after a 16th century Spanish Port off the Coast of Venezuela where they smaller, earlier beads were first identified by archeologists.
