Description
- These beads are priced and sold individually
- Second generation Nueva Cadiz beads from the African trade 3 inches long, both in excellent condition.
- The Corning Museum of Glass lists Bohemia as a possible origin for second generation Nueva Cadiz beads, which is why I'm posting them with this launch of "non-Venetian" trade beads. However, many were made in Venice too.
- Nueva Cadiz are drawn beads and some of the earliest, used by the Spanish to trade in the Americas (from Peru to colonial Jamestown, VA) Those beads were considerably smaller than the version traded to Africa later, but the composition was the same: Dark glass, coated with white, then a final layer, usually of translucent turquoise. The white under the turquoise made it appear brighter, similar to the way white under translucent red brightens White Hearts.
- Made in Venice, Italy, and/or possibly Bohemia, for the African trade early 1800s
- Named after a 16th century Spanish Port off the Coast of Venezuela where the smaller, earlier beads were first identified by archeologists.
- From the collection of Joyce Diamanti, bead researcher, writer and educator
