Description

  • Vintage silver diadem or headdress (sinsile) worn by Turkoman women of the Teke group. 25 inches wide by 6 inches long including the dangles. This piece consists of 9 linked components
  • Originally attached to the front of a cap, or other headgear, these ornaments were worn by girls and young women in some groups and married women in others.
  • Today this would easily make a fabulous belt or be stitched to shoulder to shoulder across the back of a jacket continuing the Turkoman tradition of sewing jewelry to clothing.
  • Alternately the 7 rectangular and 2 triangular components could each be the centerpiece of one of your own creations. The lightweight dangles are practically begging to be reincarnated as earrings!

  • Generically called "sinsile" these diadems all contain symbols related to family, ancestors, and fertility. The symbolic rams horns lining the top of each rectangle are considered protective. In the antique versions carnelian were believed to protect pregnant women. In this pair they are replaced by red glass, but in many cultures the color is more important than the actual composition of the cabochon
