Bright and shiny new lost wax cast face pendant from Ghana, 32x78mm
This one is discounted because part of the design is missing on the right side of the head. It's actually quite amazing how few flaws there are considering the complexity of process and the difficult conditions under which these are made.
The lost wax casting process involves first creating the object out of thin strings of wax (remember this is happening in a tropical climate!) then the object is coated in clay. The clay mold, when dry, is heated so the wax runs out through openings left for that purpose.
Molten recycled brass is then poured into the mold filling all the cavities where the wax was. Finally the mold is broken open to reveal the finished brass bead or pendant. Each one is unique because once the mold is broken it can't be re-used.
