Description
- Bright and shiny new lost wax cast face pendant from Ghana, 32x78mm
- This one is discounted because a small part of the design is missing at the top right side of the head. The other one in this batch has an equally small bit missing on the left side of the head.
- It's actually quite amazing how few flaws there are considering the complexity of process and the difficult conditions under which these are made.
- The lost wax casting process involves first creating the object in thin strings of wax (remember this is happening in a tropical climate!) then the object is coated in clay. The clay mold, when dry, is heated so the wax runs out of openings left for that purpose.
- Molten recycled brass is then poured into the mold filling all the cavities where the wax was. Finally the mold is broken open to reveal the finished brass bead or pendant, which is then cleaned and polished. Although similar, one is unique because once the mold is broken it can't be re-used.
