  • Cape Amethyst technically refers to a type of amethyst that shows contrasting layers of light colored stone with the darker purple amethyst color, however in the bead trade it has come to mean simply a light lavender version of Amethyst.
  • It's named for the Cape of South Africa, but it's also found in Bolivia, Brazil, Russia, many parts of Africa and North America.
  • Neolithic Europeans used it, as did the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, and more recently it has been regarded as a stone of royalty, used in crowns, scepters, and the rings of bishops.
  • The Greeks thought it could prevent drunkenness, today it's lauded for its capacity for curbing over-indulgence and giving up bad habits. It's also said to be able to clear the energy field of negative influences and attachments and helping one move to higher states of consciousness.
