- Greenstone and jade beads of all sizes were popular among both the Maya and the ancient Aztec people. Frida Kahlo adopted them in her self portraits in the 1950s, but it wasn't until the 1970s that she, and her beads, were more fully appreciated. My sense is that they are having another resurgence now.
- Guatemalan Greenstone is a form of Serpentine, and among a class of green stones, referred to as "cultural jades" by archeologists, because the Maya used them interchangeably with real jade, apparently valuing all of these stones equally.
