Description
- Ancient Chinese composite (essentially the same as Faience) eye bead 25x29mm
- These are some of the best known beads of the Chinese Zhou Dynasty period (1046-256 BC) which includes the Warring States period (475-221 BC)
- Like western faience beads these seem to be made of pulverized quartz, alkali, coloring agents and water which was then fused in a furnace hot enough to create a glass glaze on the outside of the bead. Some people also speculate that glass components may have been added to the faience base.
- I am not on expert on ancient beads and even less so on Chinese beads. These came to me in a trade with a reliable Chinese source, a friend of Robert Liu's so I have above reasonable confidence that they are the real thing, but I'd be happy to hear more info from an expert who knows more.
