Description
- Set of 5 pre-Columbian Tairona carnelian beads from Colombia: 2 13mm long, 2 15mm long and one 20mm long.
- One of the smallest is the famous "bullet" style in which a whole is drilled down into the top of the bead creating a cone shaped depression in the top of the bead. This makes it easier to drill perpendicularly thru the two, now thinner, sides of this cone to create the hole that allows the pendant to be strung.
- The bullet bead is at 1 o'clock in the image
- All show have conical holes showing evidence of drilling by hand
- Tairona thrived in Colombia between 250 BC and 1600 AD when they began fighting the Spanish conquerors.
- The Tairona are mostly famous for their goldsmithing, but they also worked with stones, clear quartz, carnelian and even emeralds
- The Ancient glass collection is becoming the Ancient Glass and Stone collection because it's easier to find ancient beads in this small collection than in the huge Gemstone Collection.
