Description

  • These beads have an interesting story. They were bought in Orissa, India, not far from Calcutta where we lived in the early 1980s. Beads painted and lightly varnished with many different patterns in red, brown and black.
  • Sizes range in size from 11-22mm on 28-inch strand
  • There is a small very inexpensive clasp attached. I recommend restringing
  • They don't look at all Indian, because they were in fact heavily influenced by Russian visitors.
  • Russian factory workers who exceeded their state mandated quotas in the 1960s were given winter vacations in India. Some taught the craft of painting beads to local artisans with this very attractive result.
  • The Indians were much impressed, and still told stories about the enormous size of the Russian women who went swimming in the ocean, and the equally large size of their clothing as it was draped over the balconies of the Soviet Guest House to dry.
  • From the collection of Joyce Diamanti, bead researcher, writer and educator
