Description

  • The pattern of bead was given the "campfire" name "Bear Paw" by early fur trappers and hunters in the Canadian and US west.
  • It's a very early design and very large bead with a few brick and blue murrine
  • It has some strange markings, which I think may have come from the core cooling too quickly so that when the murrine were pressed into it they split some of the coils of the wound core leaving slight shallow gaps. This and a look at the end of the bead confirm that the core was wound.
  • I guessing that as production increased later, the cores must have been drawn rather than wound. I'll have to look into that.
  • These antique beads were created by adding slices of mosaic canes to cores while semi-molten.
  • Made in Venice, Italy for the African and New World Trade early 1800s to early 1900s
