Turkoman inspired oval pendant 2.5 inches wide by 2.25 inches tall
Large red cabochon (that might be red glass or carnelian) is surrounded by lavish Turkoman style wire work and granulation
Unlike many newer pendants, which are made of flat sheet silver or white metal, this one is substantial (5mm thick not counting the cab) which indicates its age.
Only one available
Whether the cab was glass or stone was not important as the shape and decoration. In fact the Turkomen might have preferred the new and exciting red glass, in the same way that other cultures readily adopted bright glass beads to replace more subtly colored organic or stone materials.
Some Turkoman nomads settled in Afghanistan where they make traditional jewelry, as well as designs like this one that incorporate local influences and materials.
