Amethyst is found in many locations in North and South America, especially Brazil, as well as Africa, and Russia. It was so common Rwanda that we were able to collect big chunks of crystals on picnics in the countryside.
The stone has a long history in adornment, reaching back to neolithic times in Europe. Ancient Egyptians made beads and amulets out of it. Greeks, Romans, and other European cultures to the present day connect amethyst to royalty.
In ancient Greece amethyst was believed to prevent intoxication, calm anger, and relieve unrequited passion. Similarly, today's metaphysical writers credit the stone with assisting in quitting smoking, drinking or drug use. As an aid to meditation it can helps calm the mind and move us toward higher states of consciousness. It's also said to create an energetic shield to protect one from negative influences in the environment.
