Description

  • Strand of 80 vintage or possibly antique, Nepalese Bodhi seeds from a mala
  • The beads are 10-12mm diameter and range in shape and length: oblates 11x12mm, slices 6x12mm and two conical shape beads 14mm long and 10mm wide at the top and 12mm wide at the base.  Although they may have been cut to these shapes I think most of the beads (especially the oblates) have been worn to that shape by continuous use.
  • Collected in Nepal in 1983 when it was already quite old, based on patina and shapes of the beads.
  • Bodhi seeds are important to Buddhists and Hindus because the Buddha is said to have become enlightened while sitting under a bodhi tree. They are frequently used in mala (prayer beads) as I expect these were.
