Description
- These beads are priced and sold individually
- Vintage red Bohemian molded (aka pressed) chubby ovals 26x23mm
- Known as "cherry tomatoes" in the trade these beads were made in the late 1800s and early 1900s for the African trade to both east and west Africa.
- Trade beads from Bohemia (now Czech Republic) are less showy than Venetian ones, but were very popular in Africa, and remain so today as ideal complements to fancier beads from Venice
- Intrepid agents of Bohemian button and bead factories traveled all over Africa collecting samples of popular beads. Replicas of many of these beads, originally made of stone or organic materials like shell, were produced in molds in wide range of glass colors and exported by the boatload during the 1800s and early 1900s
