Description

  • These beads are priced and sold as a set of 3
  • They are components from vintage, or possibly antique, African "Wedding Bead Necklace" See: AFT-171 for example.
  • This set includes 2 claw shapes in blue and white "agate" glass and one matching  large "lightbulb" all in excellent condition.  Agate glass started with a mix of red and brown glass to imitate red agate stone beads, but soon expanded to a wide range of colors resembling banding in agate (and other kinds of beads for example malachite)
  • Made in Bohemia (now Czech Republic) during the 1800s to early 1900s
  • Traded to Africa where they became especially popular among the Fulani of Mali.
  • I've heard two stories about why they are called Wedding beads: a) they are passed from mother to daughter at the latter's marriage, b) they are worn by drummers who perform at Fulani weddings.
