Mammoth tusk beads, graduated 4-8mm (most 5-6mm) on 18-inch strands
Said to be at least 10,000 years old these come from mammoth tusks that started appearing in Alaska and the Canadian arctic as permafrost began melting in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The Ivory-like carved pendants coming out of Indonesia at the time we made of this material and I bought these beads from a man who collected the raw material and took it to Indonesia to be carved.
These beads were a sideline to that business.
The material has gotten more rare and expensive in recent years.
Attractive range of colors from cream to warm brown, beads are slightly irregular, and have small holes.
