Description
- Extra large Baoule lost was cast brass bead in Sun & Moon style 62x35mm (2.5 inches long x 1.5 inch wide)
- This bead has a flaw on one side, although it's unlikely that it would ever be seen. Flaws are not unusual considering the complexity of the process of making these beads, and the difficult conditions under which the tasks are performed.
- Each bead is first formed in wax. The wax is then covered by clay and dried, the clay is heated and the wax runs out through openings left for that purpose. Molten recycled metal is poured in. After cooling, the clay mold is broken open and each unique bead is removed and cleaned.
- In this long, delicate and laborious process it's inevitable that some beads are not perfect, I pick the best available, but there are almost always a few "flaws" that distinguish handmade beads from mass produced, machine made ones
- Although lost wax cast beads are still being made in Ghana, delicate work of this type made, in Cote d'Ivoire, has become increasingly scarce since the 1990s
