Description

  • Rare vintage Yoruba beads from Nigeria, 22-inch strand of 15 beads, each 30x9mm
  • Very distinctive work characterized by fine wirework and granulation, highly unusual in brass.
  • This strand is extraordinarily good condition. Far more often these hollow strands are covered with dents.
  • Beads in transit around, and from, Africa are transported without any packaging or padding. The durable beads that can handle that treatment also tend to be heavy so these delicate hollow beads don't stand a chance.
  • Interestingly, the dents don't seem to deter these beads' admirers. A necklace I made with gemstones and battered versions of these beads sold quickly to a well known designer.
  • The tubular beads are separated by 6-8mm "beehive" shape beads
  • Although Yoruba metalwork thrived before and after these were made in the 1950s, this particular style seems to have vanished at about the same time African colonies began asserting their Independence in 1960.
  • Only one strand available, but see similar strands at AFM-431, AFM-433 or AFM-435
