Description

  • Rare vintage Yoruba beads from Nigeria, 24-inch strand of 12 beads
  • 8 cylindrical bead 60x10mm and 4 smaller cylinders 28x8mm
  • The larger beads have been gold washed, but are also rather battered
  • Beads in transit around, and from, Africa are transported without any packaging or padding. Durable beads that can handle that treatment also tend to be heavy so these delicate hollow beads don't stand a chance.
  • Interestingly, the dents don't seem to deter these beads' admirers. A necklace I made with gemstones and battered versions of these beads sold quickly to a well known designer.
  • Although Yoruba metalwork thrived in different forms before, and after, these were made in the 1950s, this particular style seems to have vanished at about the same time African colonies began asserting their Independence in 1960.
  • Only one strand available, but see similar strands at AFM-432, AFM-433 or AFM-435
