While stored and in transit both sides are usually closed. Once you attach them to a necklace I advise opening one side only to the point at which the necklace can be secured or released easily, and leave it that way. The weight of the necklace will keep it secure. Keeping the second side always closed will ensure that the clasp is always attached so it doesn't get lost.
