The finest royal blue Lapis comes from the West Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan and is flecked with pyrite, one way to tell it's not dyed.
Beloved in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, Greeks and Romans used it as a reward for bravery.
From the Middle Ages until 1828, was used as pigment to produce the rare and expensive “aquamarine” pigment used in Renaissance paintings
