Description
- Very rare antique German glass marble bead 19mm diameter in excellent shape
- Swirls of red, orange and yellow have a name when applied to marbles of this style: Onionskin or Joseph's coat, in case that resonates with collectors
- The name onionskin describes the nesting layers that these beads are made with. A transparent of translucent core is by a "skin" of white or yellow glass. That layer is streaked with colors - in this case red, orange & yellow. Then a final clear layer is added.
- The hole in this bead is larger at one end than the other, an indication that the beads were made as marbles and pierced after the fact in their still semi-molten state. The tool that made the uneven size holes was replaced by equipment that made an even hole end-to-end through the beads around 1860 so these beads predate that.
