- Antique Venetian millefiori trade bead 30x12mm
- This bead was made with the original style of making mosaic beads since Roman or even Egyptian times. Tiny rods of glass were bundled togehter in a pattern that could be seen clearly when looking at the ends of the bundle. Tied together with wire the bundle would be fused, cooled and then sliced into murruine.
- These became beads when they were fused onto the bead core.
- Bundled cane designs always have more uneven edges than the later cased cane, but this method has its own charm seem especially well in this bead. To me it looks like a decorative tile floor or even a carpet which due to the weaving can have a similarly stippled design
- Made in Venice, Italy for the African trade, late 1700s to mid-1800s
