Description
- Antique millefiori Venetian trade bead 35x14mm
- I've seen this murrina several times and can't quite understrand what's going on in the blue and white center of it.
- The more or less round segments that cover these beads, aka murrine, are slices off a cane, in this instance, a cased cane. That means the rod of glass was coated with several layers of molten glass rather than made of a bundle of mini canes.
- It's easy enough to see that after the mystery blue and white center, the cane was cased in red, the dipped into a flower petal mold to alter the shape, then cased in white, and finally green.
- The part I don't understand is how all the slices off this can have these random appearing white lines amongst the blue. If you know, please tell me!
- Made in Venice, Italy for the African Trade, mid- 1800s to early 1900s
