Description

  • Antique Silver Amulet with dangles, found in Morocco, but may be more typical of Amazigh (Berber) people living in Tunisia.
  • Through the ages Jewish and Muslims have often lived together in North Africa and some jewelry styles overlap as jewish silversmiths often served Muslim customers too.
  • Some of the sun, moon and Hand of Fatima symbols on the dangles relate to Islam. Judaism and the older indigenous spirituality of Amazigh, making this a beautiful piece symbolically as well as practically
  • Carrying scented herbs resins was a local tradition and I thought the ends of the cylinder might come off for this purpose, but they are soldered closed
  • From the collection of Joyce Diamanti, world traveler, bead researcher, writer, editor and educator
