The hand (aka Khamsa, Hamsa or Hand of Fatima) pendant is by far the most popular amulet shape in North Africa, believed to protect the wearer from the evil eye in particular, and all manner danger, illness, and negativity in general.
Khamsa also means 5 and refers to the fingers of a hand, as well as the five pillars of Islam, and is thus considered auspicious.
Silver, mined in Morocco or from European coins, is the preferred metal among the Amazigh (Berber) groups in Morocco as well as Muslims. It is said to bring blessings, divine light and symbolize purity.
