Large Moroccan Tuareg silver Agadez cross, 5 inche long on beaded cord
This example has nice etching (although not nielloed), antique silver beads on the beaded cord, and some letters/symbols on the back.
Tuareg crosses were originally worn my men, and passed down from father to son, but today women wear them too. The Agadez style is worn as far west as Mali.
They are considered to be powerful amulets, but can be used as a form of currency to buy cattle, cloth or grain in times of need, which comes all too often in the deserts of North Africa.
The Tuareg are members of the larger Imazighen (Berber) group, the original inhabitants of North Africa.
