- The shape and the extremely fine etched geometric designs are traditional, but the stone is new.
- This piece is by a very famous Tuareg silversmith whose name I have temporarity forgotten. I will find it though and enter it soon.
- The Tuareg are a traditionally nomadic Amazigh (Berber) people who once traveled freely around the Sahara. National borders have gotten in the way, and climate change has forced many to settle. The society was highly stratified, but also being matrilineal, women hold positions of authority both in the family and the culture.
- Silversmithing has long been honored in Tuareg society, and now more than ever, offers a way to make a living in villages and towns. Their work has gained status in the US as Tuareg silversmiths are often among the most popular artists at the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This is also where they meet local artists and get access to a wider range of stones for their new work.
