Powderglass King beads, brick red with multicolor patterns, 12x15mm
Making this style of bead in a clay mold is a real feat of ingenuity by Krobo bead-makers of Ghana. The beads are made in 2 cone-shaped halves and then fused together. Unlike some other powder glass King bead styles, in this case the surface designs are individually painted on with a mixture of powdered glass, ceramic pigment and water. Then the beads get a final quick heating so fuse the glazed pattern. The makers have told me it's all too much work and they don't plan to make any more.
The cost of the original antique Venetian King beads just keeps going up tho, so who knows. I decided to buy all the strands I liked and these brick red ones are my favorite!
I'm also offering them as strands at AFG-110
