- Shell pearls look and feel very much like real pearls, and are made of natural materials (unlike glass or plastic faux pearls), but they are made by humans not directly by mollusks or oysters.
- For a smaller bead, the process involves coating natural mother-of-pearl beads with with finely ground nacre from the inner lining of oyster shells, and sometimes other materials to mimic colors other than white.
- For large beads like these, the mother-of-pearl linings of mollusk shells are ground into a find powder, then formed into a round bead with a resin binder.
- Next, the surface is coated with multiple layers of natural nacre, derived from the pearly lining of mollusk shells, or from pearls that were too misshapen to sell. Finally the beads are protected with a lacquer, which makes them more resistant than natural pearls to damage from scratches, sweat, or perfumes, etc.
- The end results are realistic looking pearl beads, available in much larger sizes and more durable, than made-by-nature pearls, and at a much lower prices!
